Peter Force was a politician, archivist, historian, newspaper editor, and printer. He had amassed a huge collection of books, maps and other material related to the American Revolution. He was one of the founders of the American Historical Society. He published a famous facsimile of The Declaration of Independence based on the 1823 plate of W. J. Stone, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Declaration.
