Fair. FIRST EDITIONS THUS OF THIS IMPORTANT EARLY AMERICAN MAGAZINE, WITH ARTICLES BY VARIOUS NOTABLES, INCLUDING GEORGE WASHINGTON. Issues include: part of June 1788, August, September, October, November, December of 1788; part of January 1791, February, March, April, May, part of June 1791 plus 3 appendices for 1791; July to December 1792. Some volumes apparently bound out of sequence. Some articles are written by or are about George Washington, Benedict Arnold, Ben Franklin and others. THE 1791 VOLUME HAS THE FAMOUS LETTER FROM MOSES SEXIAS (WARDEN OF THE HEBREW CONGREGATION OF NEWPORT) TO PRESIDENT GEORGE WASHINGTON, welcoming Washington to Newport, but asking Washington to protect the rights and liberty of American Jews, “A government which to bigotry gives no sanction, to persecution no assistance…"; this was later quoted by Washington in his reply. The 1788 volume has the list of subscribers, including Alexander Hamilton (“Hon. A. Hamilton, esq."), Capt. Stephen Decatur, “His excellency Benjamin Franklin, esquire, president of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania," “His excellency general Washington, late commander in chief of the Armies of America, marshal of France, &c. &c."
