Original publisher’s pictorial gilt–lettered blue cloth stamped in white and red, top edge gilt (recased with renewed endpapers, light rubbing along extreme edges). Second edition, INSCRIBED TWICE BY PEARY on dedication–page and again on a portrait illustration of Peary, both dated 30 November 1913. ALSO SIGNED BY THEODORE ROOSEVELT on the introduction–page dated 28 February 1912. In the introduction, Roosevelt recounts his time aboard Peary’s ship on the eve of his final effort to reach the North Pole. Roosevelt would later receive news from a native runner that he indeed discovered it, which the former president would hail in his introduction as being “one of the great feats of our time”.
