[MUGSHOTS—PENNSYLVANIA]. A group of 156 mugshots of New Castle, Pennsylvania criminals. New Castle, PA Department of Police, ca. 1926-59. Silver print mugshots (face and profile), mounted or stapled on index-size Bureau of Identification cards, nearly all with a typed or handwritten record of the subject’s name, crime, age, physical description, ethnicity/nationality, and occasional supplemental remarks. 3 x 5”. Condition generally very good. In a modern binder, organized roughly chronologically. The collection depicts white and black male subjects ranging in age from their 20s to 50s, and whose crimes include breaking and entering, larceny, shoplifting, robbery, panhandling, counterfeiting, assault, drunk and disorderly conduct, hold-ups and stick-ups, gambling, passing bad checks, and even murder. In some cases, a subject’s past crimes, aliases, physical markers such as tattoos, or brief remarks on the crime are recorded, such as “broke window of jewelry store on Long Ave. / stole rings.”
