[SCRAPBOOK – MAGIC] “Famous Conjurers 1840 – 1920" Magic Ephemera Scrapbook. Brown textured quarto scrapbook with the title lettered in gilt to the front cover. Neatly pasted inside are programs, throw-out cards, small broadsides, clippings, engravings, and related memorabilia from the lives and careers of Alexander Herrmann (theatre program), Verbeck (at the Piccadilly Hall, 1886), Henry Hatton (handbills), John Henry Anderson (a photograph of his grave by Harry Houdini), Mons. Houdin (a Robert-Houdin imitator), Professor Hellis, John Holden, Alfred Silvester (The Fakir of Oolu; a program and small broadside), Professor De Vere (program and engraving), Edward Victor, Cardini (including a Christmas Card to Cardini SIGNED by David Devant), Maskelyne & Cooke (1869 handbill from before their run at Egyptian Hall and a 4to brochure for the 1904 season featuring Martin Chapender), Cagliostro (engraved portrait), Owen Clark (photograph), Rameses (INSCRIBED AND SIGNED multi-page brochure), Horace Goldin, Isaac Fawkes (engraved image), Breslaw (contemporary newspaper clipping), Robert Heller (Dutch handbill), Balabrega, T. Nelson Downs, Signor Boz, Ajeeb the chess playing automaton, and others. Most items neatly affixed, some reinforced with old cellotape, or with short tears as a result of attempted removal, but generally in good condition or better. With a gift inscription from Jane Fleming to Dr. John Henry Grossman tipped to the front pastedown, explaining that the scrapbook may have been part of the Leo Rullman or Carl Jones estates. An outstanding assortment of broadsides, photographs, and magical ephemera from the “golden age" of the art.
