Half-length seated portrait of the widow of the Great Emancipator, with a ghostly form of Lincoln looking over her from the rear, his spectral hands grasping her shoulders. CDV format on printed photographer’s mount, 4 3/8 x 2 ¾”. Plain back. One of Mumler’s most famous spirit images.
Researchers have disputed the exact date this photograph was taken, but for the most part agree that Mary Todd Lincoln sat for the image under an assumed name, so as not to arouse any suspicions from the photographer.
